The program of emerging settlements

THE PROGRAM OF EMERGING SETTLEMENTS 

In 2019 the Hungarian Government launched a comprehensive initiative in order to facilitate the catching-up of the 300 most disadvantaged settlements of Hungary and (has) appointed Miklós Vecsei, the vice president of the Hungarian Charity Service of Malta, as the prime minister's commissioner to manage the program of emerging settlements.

This programme is supervised by the Hungarian Charity Service of order Malta. 

Its cornerstone is the development of local economies, primarily by promoting food production and self-sufficiency.
The whole programme, and especially the Malta Manufactory, operates in poverty-stricken regions,  where extreme financial struggles lead to low purchasing power.

There is no demand for locally produced high-quality goods, or only at depressed prices. 
Local people spend their little money in the retail chains of the nearby cities, and thus become part of the global supply chain. There is hardly any local food production, a minority of households grow at least some of the vegetables and fruits for themselves, and even fewer keep animals.

Unfortunately, environmental conditions pose further challenges: soil depletion, lack of water and irrigation issues. In poor villages there is little knowledge about resistant varieties of vegetables and fruits that can be grown without chemicals. Anyone who wants to start putting together a family garden may face unexpected difficulties.

We aim at offering multifaceted support, but in order to stimulate self-sufficiency and independence in these regions, there is a need for a complex intervention system. 

We have an important message. These  emerging settlements also do have a good quality of life:  people want to work, they create value. What is missing is trust in the future. Our job is to give them that confidence and to bridge that gap between their limited opportunities and future possibilities.
