Small Factories

The Charity Service of Order of Malta started building a community in Monor in 2004.

The story began with a piece of cake. One day Jolika, one the founders, decided to treat children coming home from school with freshly made cookies. Unfortunately, she could not bake, and the cookies bought in the store ran out quickly. She decided to learn how to bake, and the first thing she did was baking a zserbó.

Jolika lives in the romani encampment of Monor, where the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta started working and building a community in 2004. As one of our ultimate goals is to support employment by even establishing small factories in emerging settlements, we set up a bakery right here.

Jolika and three other women took part in business and bakery training, community development, and a year later they founded the bakery called “Elfogadás” which means: “Acceptance”. Today, more than 40 kgs of cakes are sold per week; among others, scones, pies, cookies and rolls are made here. The women partly sell the cakes at the local market, but they also deliver cakes to order and events.

The bakery helps social integration, contributes to the creation of equal opportunities, and helps women of the roma community earn extra money. 

In 2020, Elfogadás Sütöde entered the finals of the NIOK Foundation – Nonprofit.hu Civil Award in the "Best Social Enterprise" category.
